The spotted hyena, often the most recognized, showcases remarkable social behaviors, living in matriarchal clans that can consist of up to 80 individuals. Clans are highly organized, with complex communication systems that include various vocalizations, facial expressions, and body language. Contrary to the stereotype of being mere scavengers, spotted hyenas are skilled hunters, capable of taking down large prey like wildebeests and zebras, demonstrating remarkable teamwork and strategic prowess.
Hyenas also play an essential role in the scavenger community. By consuming carcasses that would otherwise spread disease, they help to keep the ecosystem clean and healthy. The digestive systems of hyenas are incredibly efficient, capable of breaking down tough materials, including bones, which further enriches the soil.
