The most well-known of the lemur species is the ring-tailed lemur, easily recognizable by its striking black-and-white tail. However, the variety of lemur species is astounding, with over 100 different types, ranging from the tiny mouse lemur to the social sifaka. Each species contributes to Madagascar's biodiversity, playing critical roles such as seed dispersers and pollinators.

Sadly, many lemur species are threatened due to habitat destruction, climate change, and illegal wildlife trade. The International Union for Conservation of Nature categorizes numerous lemurs as endangered or critically endangered, prompting urgent conservation efforts. Organizations worldwide are working to establish protected areas, promote ecotourism, and support local communities in sustainable practices.
